MUCOTUNE – Larsen Formulations

Mucotune

Composition

Each effervescent tablet Mucotune contains N-Acetylcysteine 600 mg and Ascorbic acid (Vitamin-C) 40 mg.

Mucotune is prescribed for the treatment of

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Asthma and ILD.

About the drug :

Acetylcysteine is a synthetic N-acetyl derivative of the endogenous amino acid L-cysteine, a precursor of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione. Acetylcysteine regenerates liver stores of glutathione. This agent also reduces disulfide bonds in mucoproteins, resulting in liquification of mucus. Some evidence suggests that acetylcysteine may exert an anti-apoptotic effect due to its antioxidant activity, possibly preventing cancer cell development or growth. In addition, acetylcysteine has inhibited viral stimulation by reactive oxygen intermediates, thereby producing antiviral activity in HIV patients. (NCI04)
Acetylcysteine has been shown to reduce the extent of liver injury following acetaminophen overdose. It is most effective when given early, with benefit seen principally in patients treated within 8-10 hours of the overdose. Acetylcysteine likely protects the liver by maintaining or restoring the glutathione levels, or by acting as an alternate substrate for conjugation with, and thus detoxification of, the reactive metabolite.
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) helps our body in different ways and preventing your lungs from chronic diseases is one of them. Sufficient intake of this vitamin, in a day, can boost your immune health and promote collagen formation in the skin. Presence of free radicals and toxins in the lungs due to smoking and pollution can lead to inflammation in the body. Vitamin C fights back against free radicals and toxins and also helps your body get rid of these potentially damaging molecules. It further lowers down the lung tissue damage rates, providing an opportunity to the body to repair itself. As per a 2014 study, published in the journal Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology, vitamin C may improve lung function and cut the incidence of respiratory symptoms by half during and after exercise. The major potential benefits of this nutrient are due to its antioxidant content.
Ascorbic Acid is a natural water-soluble vitamin (Vitamin C). Ascorbic acid is a potent reducing and antioxidant agent that functions in fighting bacterial infections, in detoxifying reactions, and in the formation of collagen in fibrous tissue, teeth, bones, connective tissue, skin, and capillaries. Found in citrus and other fruits, and in vegetables, vitamin C cannot be produced or stored by humans and must be obtained in the diet.
This double action formula consisting of N-Acetylcysteine and Vitamin C makes it twice as effective in protecting your lung function.

Side Effects of Mucotune

Acetylcysteine is a simple modified amino acid and appears to be hepatoprotective. In the many studies of acetylcysteine use with acetaminophen overdose as well as with other conditions such as contrast media nephropathy, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis and ulcerative colitis, it has not been associated with serum enzyme elevations during therapy or with episodes of clinically apparent liver injury. Since approval of the oral and intravenous forms of acetylcysteine, there have been no published reports of hepatotoxicity and the product label does not mention liver injury as an adverse event. Indeed, acetylcysteine may be beneficial in treating liver diseases in general, although its current indications are limited to acetaminophen overdose or acetaminophen related acute liver injury.
vitamin C Neither normal nor moderately high intakes of vitamin C are associated with liver injury or liver test abnormalities. In long term clinical trials, serum enzyme and bilirubin elevations were no more frequent with vitamin C therapy than with placebo. Indeed, in many animal models, vitamin C is protective against hepatotoxic substances and provides antioxidant and cytoprotective activity to hepatocytes. Single large doses of vitamin C, however, can cause symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea and higher doses have been reported to result in serum ALT elevations, but not to clinically apparent liver injury with jaundice.
Most of the side effects of Mucotune Tablet do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor.
